History of the Venice Beach Cotel
Venice Beach,
California was the dream of Abbot Kinney a wealthy cigarette
manufacturer who wanted to re-create Venice Italy next
to the Pacific Ocean. Instead, at the beginning of the 20th century
he created a beach-side community complete with canals, cheap hotels,
bars and restaurants, theatres and amusements parks that was tagged
the “Coney Island of the Pacific”.
Many of Abbot
Kinney’s original canals still remain in Venice
Beach as does the Bohemian spirit that attracted filmmakers ranging
from Charlie Chaplin to Dennis Hopper. Orson Welles made films
on Windward Ave, just outside the Cotel. Allen Ginsberg and the
Beat poets read their work around the corner on the Venice Boardwalk.
In the sixties, Jim Morrison wrote songs and formed a band called
The Doors” in Venice playing his first gigs on the boardwalk.
Today, The
Venice Beach Cotel occupies a unique place amongst Los Angeles
hostels. Taking up the top floors of the one of old
Venice’s most famous landmarks, the St. Mark’s Hotel,
the Cotel offers old world hostel charm with hotel standards.
Located half a block from Venice Beach and its boardwalk, and
within 10 minutes of Los Angeles airport, The Venice Beach Cotel
is ideal for long or short term accommodation. There are a choice
of private rooms and dorm rooms for between three and six people
all with views of the Pacific Ocean.
The Venice
Beach Cotel’s central location provides easy
access to not only the Venice beach but also the local cafes, restaurants,
bars, clubs, and popular nightlife scene. Also within easy walking
distance, along the world famous Venice Boardwalk, is Santa Monica’s
stylish shopping district and busy night spots.
Come see for yourself and experience the best of Venice Beach
by staying at The Venice Beach Cotel.
